Bowling Alley Houses
I've had a longstanding fascination with houses that have full-size, regulation bowling alleys inside them -- not the cute backyard mini-lane setups, but the real thing. There's something genuinely special about bowling on your own lanes: your own music, whatever you want to wear, no-tap rules if you feel like it, and you can oil the lanes as often as you want.
This whole obsession really took off after a half-joke I made years ago -- that I'd happily go on vacation if someone could find me a place in the middle of nowhere in the woods with a bowling alley in the basement. So I Googled it myself, and stumbled on a brand-new Michigan vacation rental called The Lanes at Meemo's Farm. A week later we were there, I think as their very first guests. Everything was immaculate and over the top: 75" TVs in every room, wood-look tile throughout, a hot tub, a workout room, sound systems, a real kitchen, ATVs included for the week, and a kegerator parked right next to the lanes in the basement. All of it set on a sprawling, pristine property in the Michigan woods near Evart. We've been back multiple times since, and it's been worth the trip every single time.
For years I've also been hunting for-sale listings for these houses -- I started with a Google custom search engine pointed at Zillow, Redfin, Trulia, and Realtor.com, and eventually built a proper scraper to do it systematically. (There's some craft in the query design: searching for things like "1 lane bowling" or "regulation bowling" while excluding -"bowling green" to cut out the lawn-bowling and Kentucky-city noise.) Most of them are multi-million-dollar mansions well out of reach, but every now and then a high-six or low-seven-figure listing surfaces that's actually a serious deal. The goal of this site is to catalog every house in the United States with a regulation full-size bowling alley in it.
